Tales by Light: Assignment 1
Who is the photographer and what do they photograph?
This photographer is Eric Cheng. Cheng is a wild life photographer that photographs larger sized animals that have a stigma of danger and fear surrounding them. He likes to document animals that are misunderstood, and to capture their stories that show people they are just playing an important role in their ecosystem.
What did you find the most interesting about this episode?
I found it very interesting why the photographer chose this specific subject. Most photographers that would choose a subject like this would play on the fear that the animals cause in order to easily cause the viewer to have some sort of emotion or feeling towards the photograph. In a way, the photographer finds a sort of elegance in the creatures that is very difficult to get, but he achieves it.
What did you learn from this episode?
I learned that in most cases, the photographer was in no danger. In reality the negativity surrounding the animals has come from people who create myths about these animals, or in movies that have popularized the demonization of the animals. Most people choose not to challenge the hostility of the animal, understandably, through the fear of being attacked.
Where does this episode take place? Did you like the location? Why?
This video takes place in Brazil. It was a very interesting location but I personally didn't like it due to the personal bias of not liking the heat and humidity. I also didn't really get to see anything other then a couple buildings and the swamp/river area so I don't really think i can formulate a fair opinion of the location.
Why is this work important?
This work is important because it shows that the predators shown all around the world should not be seen as scary animals who should be run away from in fear or killed, they should be seen as valuable keystone species in a elaborate ecosystem. These predators should be protected and admired as the beautiful and complex animals that they are.
